Remembrance Sunday is 8 November 2026. The council has confirmed seven services, Northwich and Upton at 9.30am; Chester's cathedral parade times and closures.
Remembrance Sunday falls on Sunday 8 November 2026. It is always the second Sunday in November, and 1 November is a Sunday this year, so the eighth is the day the parade and the cathedral service happen in Chester. Armistice Day itself is Wednesday 11 November 2026.
Updated 3 October: the council has started its 2026 list. Seven services are now confirmed, including Northwich, Upton-by-Chester, Tarporley and Tattenhall (see “Confirmed for 2026” below). Chester city centre is not on it yet.
Cheshire West and Chester Council’s Remembrance page now headlines “Details of Remembrance activities for 2026”, but on 3 October 2026 it did not yet include the Chester cathedral parade, and the Public Notice Portal held no Remembrance road closure notice for the borough. That is normal. Last year the council’s announcement went out on 31 October, eight days before the event, so expect this year’s detail in the last few days of October.
What follows is what Chester has done every year, from the council’s and the cathedral’s own material, so you can plan around it now. We will replace each figure with the 2026 confirmation as it lands.
Chester city centre: the shape of the morning
| Time | What happens |
|---|---|
| From 9.30am | Parade steps off and marches through the city centre to the cathedral |
| 10.15am | Service of Remembrance inside Chester Cathedral |
| 10.45am | Wreath laying in the Cathedral gardens |
| 11am | Two minute silence |
Those are the 2025 timings, published by the council and repeated independently by Chester Nub News on 30 October 2025. They have barely moved in years: the council’s own 2022 announcement gives the same 10.15am service and names the start point, a military parade stepping off from Bridge Street at 9.30am.
The 2022 notice also explains where to stand if you are not going inside. Viewing for the act of remembrance outside is from the footpaths of St Werburgh Street and the surrounding area. In that year, seats for the service inside the cathedral had to be booked through the cathedral’s online booking service. Whether that applies again in 2026 has not been said, so treat the inside service as ticketed until the cathedral confirms otherwise.
The Lord Mayor of Chester leads the city’s act of remembrance. In 2025 that was Councillor Sherin Akhtar, who also led the Armistice Day service (council, 31 October 2025).
Armistice Day, Wednesday 11 November 2026: a short service at 10.50am in Chester Cathedral Gardens, St Werburgh Street, with prayers, the last post and the two minute silence. That has been the pattern for several years running.
Road closures: last year’s order, and why yours may differ
The council makes one borough-wide temporary order covering every Remembrance parade, and it is issued days before the event. The 2026 order does not exist yet. The closest thing to a forecast is the 2024 order, which shut these city centre streets on Remembrance Sunday (Chester Standard):
| Street | Closed | Parking and loading |
|---|---|---|
| Northgate Street | 10am to noon | No parking or loading 5am to 1pm |
| St Werburgh Street | 8am to 4.30pm | No parking or loading 5am to 1pm |
| Bridge Street | 8am to 10.30am | No parking or loading 5am to 1pm |
St Werburgh Street is the long one. It stays shut into the afternoon, well after the service ends, and it is the street the cathedral fronts onto.
One thing worth knowing if you are heading into town afterwards: the security bollards go up around Town Hall Square for the commemorations, and in 2024 the crews began assembling the Christmas market as soon as they came down. The Chester Christmas Market opens on 18 November 2026, ten days after Remembrance Sunday, so the square will already be a building site either side of the weekend.
Outside the city, the same 2024 order closed roads in eight other places across the borough:
| Place | Closed |
|---|---|
| Upton-by-Chester | 8.30am to 12.30pm, Church Lane, Heath Road, Mill Lane, Wealstone Lane |
| Guilden Sutton | 10.45am to 11.30am, School Lane, Wicker Lane, Station Lane |
| Tarporley | 10am to 11am, Rode Street, High Street, Utkinton Road |
| Tarvin | 10am to 11.45am, Church Street |
| Tattenhall | 10am to noon, High Street and Church Bank |
| Malpas | 10am to 12.30pm, B5069 Church Street, B5395 High Street |
| Little Sutton | 1.30pm to 3.15pm, A41 Chester Road |
| Neston | 2pm to 5pm, B5136 High Street, Bridge Street, Chester Road |
Do not treat those as 2026 facts. Treat them as the pattern, and as a warning about the A41 at Little Sutton and the High Street at Neston, both of which close in the afternoon rather than the morning.
There is a reason village arrangements sometimes change at short notice. The council’s road closures and traffic management rules say the organiser has to hire and pay for an approved traffic management company. The council writes the legal order for free, but if no company can be secured the closure is refused on safety grounds and the event has to be changed so it does not use the road. The police will aim to send a wreath layer, but they state plainly that they cannot provide officers to manage closures.
Confirmed for 2026
These seven are on the council’s 2026 list, checked on 3 October 2026. All are on Sunday 8 November unless shown.
| Where | Time | What happens |
|---|---|---|
| Northwich | 9.30am | Parade at Crum Hill, 10am service at St Helen’s Church, Act of Remembrance at the cenotaph 10.45am, then back to Memorial Court |
| Upton-by-Chester | 9.30am | Parade steps off from Holy Ascension Church, Church Lane; service 10am, wreaths at the memorial 11am |
| Hartford | 9.40am | From Hartford Village Hall to St John’s Church, wreath laying 11am |
| Moulton | 9.45am | Procession from Summerfield Drive and Main Road to St Stephen’s Church; 10.45am procession to the cenotaph; refreshments at the Royal British Legion |
| Tattenhall | 10am | Service at St Alban’s, Act of Remembrance at the war memorial 11am |
| Tarporley | 10.25am | Parade from Burton Square to St Helen’s Church, wreaths at the war memorial |
| Hartford, Green Field | Wed 11 Nov, 11am | Short wreath laying at the war memorial |
Two changes from 2025 are worth knowing: Northwich now forms up at Crum Hill and goes to St Helen’s Church before the cenotaph, and Hartford’s start is 9.40am, not the 9.20am step-off listed last year.
Services across the borough
These are the 2025 arrangements from the council’s list, for places it has not yet confirmed for 2026. Times for small village services rarely change, but check with the organiser before travelling.
- Ellesmere Port, Civic Square: service at the cenotaph from 10.45am.
- Ellesmere Port, Cromwell Road memorial: noon on the Friday before, which in 2026 would be 6 November.
- Ellesmere Port, Christ Church Westminster: 9.30am.
- Willaston, Christ Church: 10.45am.
- Little Sutton, Royal British Legion at St Paul’s Church: 1.30pm.
- Neston, St Mary’s and St Helen’s: parade from 2.30pm.
- Weaverham: 2pm, Northwich Road to St Mary’s Church.
- Barnton: 10.30am at the Townfield Lane war memorial, Jubilee Corner.
- Alvanley: 10am, St John the Evangelist.
- Utkinton and Cotebrook: 10.30am to 11.30am at the village hall.
- Pulford: shortly before 11am on Armistice Day itself.
Winsford is the one to watch. The town’s memorials were moved into the new civic square during the town centre rebuild, and in 2023 the events had to be split across two days, a Saturday service and a Sunday parade, because of construction and limited space (council, 1 November 2023). The town council and the Royal British Legion organise it jointly and confirm the format each autumn.
Parking and getting there
Northgate Street and St Werburgh Street both sit inside the closure, so the car parks off them are awkward on the morning. Little Roodee and the Frodsham Street multi-storey stay reachable from the ring road, and the park and ride sites are unaffected. Tariffs for every council car park, including the bays that are free on Sundays, are on our parking in Chester page, and anything else digging up the approach roads that week will show on roadworks and travel.
What we will add
We will check the council’s Remembrance page and the borough’s public notices through late October and add the 2026 parade step-off, the confirmed service times, the road closure order with its street list, and any change to the Winsford arrangements. If the cathedral requires tickets for the inside service again, that will be here too.
