Lanterns & Light runs 13 November 2026 to 3 January, timed entry from 4.15pm, tickets from £12. The zoo says you will not see any animals on the trail.

Lanterns & Light at Chester Zoo runs from Friday 13 November 2026 to Sunday 3 January 2027. Tickets are on sale now, entry is by timed slot, and prices start at £12 depending on the date you pick (Chester Zoo).

Before you book, there is one thing the zoo says plainly in its own FAQ and almost nobody expects: you will not see any animals.

“Lanterns & Light follows a specific route around the zoo and our indoor animal habitats will stay closed. You won’t be able to see any of our animals during the event.”

That is the zoo’s own wording. The event is a light trail with lanterns, puppets and installations, not an evening at the zoo. If your children are coming to see the elephants, you need a separate daytime ticket, and that has consequences below.

Times, and the zoo’s own contradiction

The headline on the event page says 16:30 to 20:00. The FAQ on the same page says you choose a slot “from 4:15pm to 8pm (times vary depending on your chosen date)”. So the first slot may be 4.15pm or 4.30pm depending on the date, and the booking system is the only place that settles it.

The rest of the timing is consistent:

  • Entry is by timed slot every 15 minutes
  • Last entry is 15 minutes after the final slot each day
  • The zoo closes 75 minutes after the final slot each day
  • The trail itself takes 60 to 90 minutes to walk

There is also a quiet hour at 4pm on selected dates, with ticket numbers limited for a calmer trail, and two adult-only evenings where every attendee has to be 18 or over. The zoo does not publish which dates those fall on anywhere on its website: they only appear inside the booking calendar.

The 3.30pm trap if you are visiting in the day

This is the practical detail that catches families out, and again it is the zoo’s own:

“If you’re visiting the zoo during the day you’ll need to go back to the main entrance at 3.30pm when the zoo closes and wait for your arrival time for Lanterns & Light so we recommend booking an earlier session time to avoid having to wait around.”

So a day at the zoo followed by the light trail means leaving the site at 3.30pm, queuing again at the main entrance, and waiting outside until your slot. A daytime zoo ticket is separate and has to be bought separately. Book the earliest Lanterns slot you can if you are doing both.

What tickets exist

The zoo sells six types (Chester Zoo tickets page):

Ticket What it is
Standard A fixed date and time slot, from £12
Member Automatic discount, no code or login needed, card checked on the night
Quiet hour 4pm on selected dates, limited numbers
Adult only Two evenings, everyone 18+
Any timeslot Fixed date, turn up any time that day
Anytime any date No date fixed at all, choose later

On the age and carer rules the zoo is specific:

  • Children under 1 go free. Ages 1 and 2 are £2.50 each
  • Carers go free but you still have to book them a ticket
  • A Blue Badge is not accepted as proof of care. The zoo asks instead for Disability Living Allowance for a child under 16, Personal Independence Payment for ages 16 to 64, or an Attendance Allowance or Carer’s Allowance award letter. Carers must arrive and leave with the person they care for

Full adult and child prices are not published on the zoo’s website. They vary by date and by slot, and the booking system sits behind a bot check we cannot read automatically, so “from £12” is the only figure the zoo states in public.

Parking, food and getting there

  • Parking at the main entrance is free. The zoo’s phrasing is “ample FREE parking”, and this is one of the few large Christmas light trails in the North West where parking is not a separate charge
  • You can bring your own food and drink, but no alcohol. There is festive food and drink to buy on the trail
  • The route is pushchair accessible
  • The zoo is at Upton-by-Chester, CH2 1EU, north of the city and off the A41

If you are coming from the city centre by car on a Saturday in December, the Christmas market traffic is the thing to plan around rather than the zoo itself. Our parking in Chester page has the council tariffs if you are combining the two, and roadworks and travel carries anything closed that week.

Lights, and what happens in bad weather

The trail uses flashing lights but not strobe. The zoo says it works to photosensitive epilepsy guidelines and locks sequences so lights never exceed four flashes per second.

In extreme weather the zoo “may need to cancel the event or close certain elements of the trail”, and says it will email ticket holders if it cancels or delays opening. Otherwise the advice is to wrap up: the trail runs outdoors whatever the weather.

The 2026 edition keeps the Sony Music partnership, and the zoo lists a new route through the site, more interactive puppets, fairground rides and Father Christmas.

Also on this season

Chester’s other winter fixtures are on our Chester Christmas market page, which also covers the Winter Watch and Lantern parades, and the Chester pantomime page.

What we will do with this page

We will add the adult-only evening dates, the quiet hour dates and the full price bands once the zoo publishes them outside the booking system, and check whether the first slot is 4.15pm or 4.30pm.
